A report from Daan in ’t Veld with notes and analysis from other players including GM Pascal Charbonneau

‘Here I played Rfe1. Apparently a big mistake. E-file is irrelevant and sacrificing exchange on e5 was even more silly. After Rxf7 black needs to be careful. For example Rxf7 Qxf7 h3 h5 Ne4 is already over.’
‘My opponent chose a setup with d4, Nf3 and Bg5. I responded with …d6, …Nf6 and …Nbd7, eventually exchanging his bishop after …h6, …g5 and …Nh5, reaching a comfortable position. My opponent later opened up the position to create counterplay, and we reached a roughly equal endgame. I was a pawn up, but with all pawns on one flank, I couldn’t convert the advantage. The game ended in a draw.’
‘During the game I felt I had misplayed the opening (which I had), but it wasn’t as bad as I thought. This position was my last chance to get an equal position:

I didn’t dare to play 17..,Rxa2, because of Rxd7 followed by Be7, but the beast gives 18..,Qe6 19.Rf-d1, c4 20.Be7, Nd3! I played 17..,Qe6 right away and after a series of suboptimal moves I had zero compensation for my pawn left.

Luckily my opponent blundered an exchange! I just played Ra4, threatening to take on b2. After the brainfart Bc3, Ne3 I’m even slightly better, but couldn’t find the right path. 1/2-1/2′

Dxd6 20.

Te8+ volgt 40.Te3!
‘VAS truly feels like my home away from home, and the proverbial flame that lights up upon arrival continues to burn if ever so slightly no matter where in the world I end up. This trip amounted to an all around success; starting from the end, VAS scored an upset (although I considered us to be well matched to take on our valiant opponents from Paul Keres and walked through the modern Utrecht train station on Saturday morning feeling confident) win where I feel like everyone played a great game – even me!
The trip began as it usually does, with a short journey from Schipol to wherever I am staying, but every time it feels a bit more like I am a local – only needing to be reminded once that my Dutch directions to the ever helpful Niels were nonsensical. This time around, thanks to the generosity of an Amsterdam chess player (editorial – please add the name if appropriate, I did not want to assume) I ended up in the Piip, an area I had not really explored before. I spent the first two nights there, and one highlight included the “Heineken Experience” – something that
sounded touristy for my taste but I ended up thoroughly enjoying. At the end of the tour, I went to the rooftop to enjoy the view and one more beer. The Pugliese Polyglot who was working the bar recommended, of the six options available for consumption, an original Heineken beer topped with espresso foam. While this sounded disgusting on some level, she was easy on the eyes and I thought to myself that because it was early in the day, adding espresso would reduce the guilt on my conscience for feeding alcohol to my body. And indeed it was extremely pleasant.
I also enjoyed Tibetan food and conversation with Niels, and remarkable pizza in the West, before completely butchering a winning position in the Bekke which left me angry and determined to redeem myself on Saturday in Utrecht.
After two days in the Piip, I made my way to Haarlem where I was fortunate to be welcome in the home of the most famous person I get to call a friend, whose name shall remain undisclosed for fear of more paparazzis showing up. We walked by soccer legend Wim Kieft, whose wife was evidently impressed and excited to walk by my legendary friend. That is how you know what you are dealing with. We had a lovely time in Haarlem. For our final minutes of preparation for our tough opponents, we were treated to a Halloween production that was scary, funny, and charming by three kids. I understood the two final words “Happy Halloween” – and I knew then that our opponents were in trouble, and prayed to Caissa that I would be paired with black (that wish is always granted) against the strongest opponent possible.
Since someone is writing the report about the match itself – I will just say that I felt throughout that our chances were excellent. It was a great moment when the match was clinched, and it’s awesome to be part of a team that cares so much for one another. Celebrations were fun as always, all the more so when we win!
As for my game – I am not very often happy with my own play and am my own’s toughest critic, but I was happy with this one. It turned into a mess, and I was very proud of a few moves I made.
Until next time –’
Pascal laat het niet bij woorden alleen! Zijn zetten zijn zo mogelijk nog inspirerender.

An interesting and complex opening where it felt like at many points, both white and black have many possibilities too complex to analyze. Here, I chose to provoke Bxc6 by retreating to e7 – since black has mini threats of either …h6 or …Nd5 15…Be7 16.Bxc6 bxc6 17.Rxe5 while again it was not possible to calculate everything, it felt like black had at least adequate compensation, maybe a tad more. 17…h6 very happy with this simple move, which forces white to make another decision 18.Bd2 ( 18.Bxf6 Bxf6 19.Re4 Qd7 I felt like two bishops would be strong here ) 18…Qd7 Rxe6 was looming and I preferred not to allow the possibility of ruining the pawn structure 19.Nf3 most logical and testing, but there were many possibilities here too 19…Bg4 20.Ncxd4

20…Nh7! I was so proud of this counterintuitive retreat. The knight belongs on d5 – but the d-file needs to be open to exploit the pins (especially with the B coming to f6) .. sometimes the N can also reach …g5 with good effect 21.Qe2 Bf6 22.Qe4 Rad8! hard to resist taking anything, but it was correct! 23.Be3 ( 23.Bc3 was a tougher nut to crack though black has a few paths to an edge ) 23…Ng5!

Kind of picturesque 24.Nxg5 (24.Bxg5 hxg5 everything collapses ) 24…Rxe5 simplest 25.Qh7+ Kf8 26.Ne4 Rxe4 27.dxe4 Bxd4 28.Bf4 props to Ten Hertog, very sneaky to the very end 28…Qe6 29.Re1 Qxa2 30.Bd6+ Ke8 31.Qf5 Although it does not threaten anything, it is a beautiful idea! 31…Rxd6 ( 31…Bxf5 32.exf5+ Kd7 33.Re7+ Kc8 34.Rc7+ Kb8 35.Rd7+ almost works, but there was no need to calculate ) 0-1
Op bord 1 won Li van Peter Lombaers.

‘I played the opening inaccurately. My early Pe2-g3 does not prevent h7-h5 but provokes it. 12.g5 Nh7?! This is the normal reply to g4-g5 in such positions, but here it is a bit dubious. [Better was 12…Ne8] 13.h4 Aiming for the next pseudo-sacrifice, which is white’s only way to keep some advantage and initiative. 13…f6 14.Nxh5 fxg5?? Based on the engine evaluations, this deserves a double question mark. [Black should have gone for 14…gxh5 15.g6 f5 16.gxh7+ Kh8 with just a tiny advantage for white] 15.Nxg7 Kxg7 16.Qd2 This is just winning, but even better were according to the engine: [16.h5 gxh5 17.Rxh5 I looked at this, but it seemed much less clear to me than what I played. Still, it is White’s best line.; 16.Be2 gxh4 17.Qd2; 16.dxc6] 16…Rxf3

[16…cxd5 17.Nxd5! Rxf3 18.hxg5 Nxe4 19.Qh2 gives White a winning attack.] 17.dxc6! [Initially, I intended 17.hxg5 but I didn’t see anything convincing after 17…Qb6 The engine line 18.Kd1 Bg4 19.Kc2+- was above my pay grade.] 17…Ne6 Clearly insufficient, but there’s just nothing Black can try. 18.Be2 Rf7 19.h5 gxh5 20.Bxh5 Rf8 21.cxb7 I couldn’t find a direct tactical win for White, but the game is decided anyway. 21…Bxb7 22.0-0-0 Nf6 23.Bxg5 Rh8 24.Rdg1 Kf8 25.Bg4 Rxh1 26.Rxh1 Nxg5 27.Qxg5 Kf7 28.Rh6 Nxg4 29.Rh7+ 1-0

‘Last year I wrote in our report that we played het sympathieke Paul Keres 2. On the Paul Keres website, they wondered how we would describe Paul Keres 1 this year. Well, I’m just gonna say it: Paul Keres 1 is also sympathiek. That whole club is sympathiek. At some point during the game, I went to the bar to get a tea and I must have looked a little stressed, because some Paul Keres players told me I could skip the line, order and get back to my game as quick as possible. That’s what I call sympathiek.
Okay, my game: I was paired with the strong (and sympathiek) IM Niels Ondersteijn. The game lasted 78 moves. And I’m happy to report that I made 77 pretty decent moves. Unfortunately, my 35th move was a straight up blunder.
In this position (+4 for white) Niels played d5-d4. I was low on time, took the pawn and after Rxd4 Kg4 Rd5! the position is a draw according to the computer. I tried for another 40 moves, but he defended really well (not so sympathiek). Instead, Kg4 or Rd1 (or other moves, just not exd4) would have led to a won endgame.’
Eindstand Paul Keres – VAS: 4-6.
