Deze wedstrijd was ik voor het eerst als non playing teamcaptain mee. Wat doe je in die rol eigenlijk?! Een beetje alles in goede banen leiden, en met name zorgen dat de spelers zich volledig op de partij kunnen focussen. Verslag schrijven, geruststellende knikjes uitdelen en het wedstrijdformulier invullen, dat soort dingen. Ik arriveer wat aan de late kant dus dat is al gebeurd, godver.
Het denksport centrum waarin LSG speelt is lekker warm binnen. Onze spelers zijn goedgemutst en tonen de gezonde variant van wedstrijdspanning.
Ik heb een goed nieuw boek mee, dat ik misschien wel in 1 ruk ga uitlezen vandaag ,het regent buiten. Kortom, alle ingrediënten voor een lekker dagje schaken kijken.
Lsg blijkt optimaal opgekomen. Met nog versterking zelfs in de persoon van Internationaal Meester Rudy van Wessel.
De klokken worden aangezet en ik ga gelijk naar buiten. Ik heb een oliebollenkraam gespot om de hoek. Met zes oliebollen voor maar 7 euro keer ik terug. Hilke maakt er gelijk dankbaar gebruik van. Hij klungelt echter wat met de poedersuiker en zit al spoedig tot eigen ergernis helemaal onder. In een poging zichzelf te fatsoeneren haast hij zich naar het toilet. Als hij zich vervolgens weer wat gestrest naar buiten begeeft met nog steeds duidelijk sporen van poedersuiker op zijn gezicht, levert dat fronsende blikken van omstanders op. Zo komt Amsterdam dus aan zijn reputatie.
Na het begin staan we al tijd voor op veel borden. Sierk heeft vrij snel een dame loos middenspel op het bord. Hij staat iets actiever maar dat is wel vaak schijn in dit soort stellingen. Rafael heeft stijlgetrouw gelijk een scherpe stelling. Met 2 mooie dominante lopers. Wel ten koste van een pion. Patriek heeft een wat droge maar prima stelling tegen New in Chess baas Remmelt Otten. Het is wel lastig spelen tegen iemand die 40% van de schaakboeken kent. Al zal het voor Remmelt ook geen makkie zijn.
Marc speelt natuurlijk ook een scherpe opening, hij straalt vertrouwen uit. Het is het type partij waarbij hij zich als een vis in het echter voelt. Marcos speelt het Frans met zwart. Hij is op het laatste moment opgetrommeld maar oogt ook ontspannen. Ed krijgt met zwart te maken met een actieve witte dame die vroeg op pad gaat. Onduidelijk wat het doet. Anton heeft een prettige stelling met wit. De zwarte dame lijkt een beetje onhandig te staan op a6
Hilke is ook prettig uit de opening gekomen. Hij lijkt alles te hebben wat je wil met zwart. Maar hoe het ook te zetten in iets concreets is de vraag. De tegenstander van Sierk verrast met de zet d4. Er lijkt een middenspel te ontstaan waarin de witte koning kwetsbaar is en wit ook de enige met zwaktes in de stelling is. Sierk ontdekt echter ook mogelijkheden. Namelijk veld e4
De stellingen van Patriek en Ed zijn wat passief maar lijken gelijkwaardig. De match is na 1 uur in evenwicht, misschien zelfs licht in ons voordeel. Ik heb inmiddels een oliebol en een bak kibbeling op. Patriek verbruikt wat veel tijd terwijl er niet veel aan de hand is. Hopelijk creëert hij niet zijn eigen problemen.
Marc speelt weer een originele partij. De stelling van Tex is heel interessant. Zwart heeft een pion minder en nog wat onhandige structuur met e6 en f5. Maar wit heeft een lelijke dubbele geïsoleerde c-pion. En een pion f3 die ook niet fijn staat. En vanwege de zwarte f5 pion ook moeite om de witte loper op f1 te bevrijden.
Rafael zet duidelijk druk met wit. Zwart gebruikt wat meer tijd om het bij elkaar te houden. Victor zit in een scherpe variant die hij zowaar best goed kent weet ik. Zijn tegenstander is alles aan het uitrekenen en dat kost veel tijd.
Anton gooit met e5 de knuppel in het hoenderhok. De stelling van de tegenstander lijkt te wankelen.
Victor pleegt een typisch stukoffer het bord vliegt in de fik. De tegenstander moet het allemaal maar zien te redden en duikt al onder de 20 minuten. En dat met nog meer dan 20 zetten voor de boeg in een complexe stelling. Marcos staat met zijn eerste zwart partij in lange tijd eigenlijk best ok. Alleen zijn koning blijft in het midden staan. Ook omdat rokeren niet goed mogelijk is. Wat hier de implicaties van zijn is nog niet helemaal duidelijk.
Ed heeft inmiddels alles op orde. Hij staat niet langer passief. De echte strijd moet nog losbarsten. Dat gebeurt zodra de witte centrum pionnen naar voren komen. De witte dame op b1 zal niet gelukkig zijn. Het is sowieso de match van actieve dames. Op de borden van Marc, Tex, Anton en Ed zijn de meeste zetten in de eerste fase van de partij met de dame gedaan. Sierk kan kiezen tussen Pd6 & Pf6 schaak waarnaar het paard hoe dan ook er af geslagen wordt. Beiden zetten hebben grote gevolgen voor de structuur. Intuïtief voelt vanaf mijn luie plek aan de zijkant de zet Pd6 als de kritieke zet. Maar dat is zonder ook maar enig rekenwerk. Sierk speelt Pf6. Ik bestel een spa rood en overweeg om het boek open te slaan.
Voor ik het boek opensla toch nog een rondje. Tex heeft zijn structuur aanzienlijk verbeterd. De pion van e6 is een veldje opgeschoten. En alle zwarte stukken staan harmonieus. Wit staat nog wel een pion voor, maar het is nog steeds de dubbele geïsoleerde c-pion.
Bij Sierk is er een dubbel toren eindspel op het bord gekomen. Sierk met loper, tegenstander met paard. De witte f6 pion kan een probleemkind worden. Een strijd om de open d-lijn lijkt door dat zelfde probleemkind op de lange termijn wel in het voordeel van Sierk te moeten uitvallen. En dan is er nog het springende paard. Die zijn altijd lastig. Ik ben nog niet toe aan het boek merk ik terwijl ik na 1 slokje spa rood je realiseer dat ik daar eigenlijk ook geen zin in heb. Eigenlijk wil ik weer terug de speelzaal in. Het is een spannende wedstrijd. De gemiddelde speeltijd per speler is inmiddels minder dan een half uur
Anton lijkt inmiddels echt goed te staan. Hij staat actiever, heeft meer ruimte en de zwarte koning kan niet meer rokeren. Partij uit 1 stuk vooralsnog.
Holy guacamole, Victor zijn tegenstander gooit er een volle toren tegenaan?! Noodgedwongen, of voor eigen kansen. Als het het laatste is dan is me nog niet helemaal duidelijk hoe. Want de witte dame kan prima mee verdedigen. Intussen moet ik ook al heb nadenken over waar we straks gaan eten. Heb ik trek in Chinees?! Geen moment rust.
De kruitdampen zijn opgetrokken bij Victor. Hij heeft een kwaliteit tegen 2 pionnen meer. Het lijkt er goed uit te zien. Zijn tegenstander moet bovendien nog 10 zetten in 2 minuten doen. Anton speelt een hele fijne partij. Patriek moet alle zeilen bijzetten om in de partij te blijven. Rafael zijn stelling oogt overweldigend maar hij heeft nog niets concreets. Marc neemt de zwarte koning onder vuur. De zwarte stukken lijken overbelast. Tenzij zwart eruit kan rokeren (het is bijna niet voor te stellen dat dit kan)
Opeens word ik overvallen door de gedachte dat het misschien meer een dag voor pizza is. Gelukkig kom ik snel bij mijn zinnen. Wij openen de score! Marc wint overtuigend en met een knaller van een combinatie aan het eind. 1-0. Tex heeft zijn pion terug en Ed en zijn tegenstander wikkelen af naar dubbele loper tegen loper/paard (Ed). Ed heeft een een meerderheid op de dame vleugel die makkelijker om te zetten is in een vrijpion. Patriek toont weer de straatvechter mentaliteit die hij zich eigen heeft gemaakt. Hij bijt zich vast in de stelling en lijkt de grootste problemen te hebben overwonnen.
Anton wint ook zeer overtuigend. De druk werd alsmaar verder opgebouwd tot het bij zwart allemaal niet meer te houden was 2-0. Ook Victor wint. De aanhoudende tijdsdruk wordt de zwartspeler te veel. Hij gaat door zijn vlag in een ingewikkelde stelling 3-0
Bij Patriek is het toch misgegaan helaas. Waar dat gebeurd is is me ontgaan 3-1. Bij Rafael worden er stukken geruild, hij staat nog steeds optisch mooi en actief maar de pion die hij achterstaat gaat zwaarder wegen. Het wordt een spannende eindfase van de wedstrijd want bij Marcos is het plots ook uit. In een middenspel met ongelijke lopers snijdt de zwartveldige loper van zijn tegenstander met desastreuze gevolgen door zijn stelling heen. 3-2
Bij Rafael staat zijn witveldige loper plots ingeslopen. Het kost hem een stuk tegen een pion. Het is verloren maar er liggen nog wel kansjes. Tex heeft een absolute heksenketel op het bord maar houdt in wederzijdse tijdnood het hoofd koel en lijkt een betere stelling te kunnen gaan uitmelken. Bij Ed is er een ongelijke loper eindspel ontstaan dat normaal in remise zou moeten eindigen. Bij Hilke is het daadwerkelijk remise geworden. Al blijft later dat hij heel goed stond in de eindstelling. 3,5-2,5. Ondertussen heb ik nog geen idee wat we moeten eten. Ik heb eigenlijk ook helemaal geen trek meer. De spanning is op maag geslagen.
Rafael zijn kansen op een resultaat nemen toe. De tegenstander is een kwaliteit kwijtgeraakt waarvoor de materiële achterstand niet zo groot meer is. En de witte b-pion kan weleens een probleem voor zwart worden. De tegenstander van Ed blijft dingen proberen. Zou er iets van een zetdwang positie kunnen ontstaan op de dame vleugel!?
Tex staat beter en zijn tegenstander consumeert veel tijd. Patriek en Victor doen zich ondertussen te goed aan de oliebollen. Heeft Hilke een derde genomen? De zak is in ieder geval leeg. Bij Ed lijkt de tegenstander langzaamaan progressie te boeken. De materiaal verhouding blijft gelijk maar een vrijpion behoort plots de mogelijkheden en Ed zijn loper staat wel heel passief. Toch lijkt het me dat dit nog steeds objectief een remise eindspel moet zijn. Sierk en zijn tegenstander maken er nog een creatief einde van, maar ook hier lijkt remise het meest waarschijnlijk. Bij Rafael valt de extra b-pion er plots af. Waarom stond die niet al op b4?! Een half team loopt inmiddels te ijsberen.
Tex lijkt zich met vaste hand naar een overwinning te spelen. Sierk en zijn tegenstander komen na een extreem gevecht remise overeen 4-3 Ed lijkt het te gaan keepen
Tex wint!! Wat een stalen zenuwen. 5-3. Nu moet er nog maar 1 halfje uit de partijen van Rafael en Ed komen voor een stunt. Rafael staat materiaal achter en heeft het moeilijk. Ed is duidelijk remise. Nee, Ed staat verloren. Nee, nu is het echt remise. Jongens, het is klaar Ed gaat verliezen. Rafael moet een bittere pil slikken. Zijn goede spel wordt helaas niet beloond en hij gaat strijdend ten onder nadat hij wederom krachtschaak liet zien in de beginfase.
En bij Ed… We durven geen voorspellingen meer te doen. Al lijken er wel de contouren van een glimlach om Ed zijn mondhoeken te vormen. Zit het ons dan eindelijk dit seizoen mee?! Er gaat 1 van zijn pionnen af, en nog 1 pion. Ed heeft nog maar 1 pion tegen 4 pionnen. Maar het lijkt nog steeds remise. Dan speelt zijn tegenstander b4 en plots zijn er toch problemen. Op een studie-achtige manier gaat hij ten onder. Na heroïsch verdedigen. Toch nog 5-5
We hadden echt meer verdiend, maar alsnog een knap resultaat!

I attended this match for the first time as a non-playing team captain. What do you actually do in that role?! I brought a good new book that I might read in one sitting today, it’s raining outside. In short, all the ingredients for a nice day of watching chess.

The clocks are turned on and I immediately go outside. I spotted an oliebollen stall around the corner. I return with six oliebollen for only 7 euros. Hilke immediately makes grateful use of it. He stands slightly active, but that often turns out to be only optical in these types of positions. True to style, Rafael has a sharp game. With 2 beautiful dominant bishops. At the costs of a pawn though. Patriek has a somewhat dry but excellent position against New in Chess boss Remmelt Otten. It is difficult to play against someone who knows 40% of the chess books. Although it won’t be easy for Remmelt either.
Marc also plays a sharp opening, of course, he radiates confidence. It is the type of game where he feels like a fish in water. Marcos plays French with black. He was called in at the last minute but also looks relaxed. Ed has to deal with black with an active white queen who leaves early. Unclear what it does. Anton has a nice position with white. The black queen seems to be standing a bit awkwardly on a6
Hilke also came out of the opening pleasantly. He seems to have everything you want with black. But the question is how to translate it into something concrete. Sierk’s opponent surprises with the move d4. A middle game seems to arise in which the white king is vulnerable and white is also the only one with weaknesses in the position. Patriek’s and Ed’s positions are somewhat passive but seem equal. The match is in balance after 1 hour, perhaps even slightly in our favor. I have now had an oliebol and a bowl of fried cod. Patriek is consuming time. And quite a lot while it doesn’t seem like much is going on. Hopefully he doesn’t create his own problems.
Marc plays an original game again. Tex’s position is very interesting. Black has one less pawn and a somewhat clumsy structure with e6 and f5. But White has an ugly double isolated c-pawn. And a pawn f3 that doesn’t look good either. And because of the black f5 pawn it is also difficult to free the white bishop on f1.
Rafael is clearly putting pressure with White. Black uses a little more time to keep it together. Victor is in a sharp variation that he actually knows quite well, I know. His opponent is calculating everything and that takes a lot of time.
Anton throws the ball into the woods with e5. The opponent’s position seems to be faltering.
Victor commits a typical piece sacrifice and the board catches fire. The opponent just has to make it through and is already under 20 minutes. And that with more than 20 moves ahead in a complex position. Marcos is actually doing quite well with his first black game in a long time. Only his king remains in the middle. Also because castling is not really possible. It is not yet entirely clear what the implications of this are.
Ed has everything in order now. He no longer stands passively. The real battle has yet to begin. This happens as soon as the white center pawns come forward. The white queen on b1 will not be happy. In any case, it is the match of active ladies. On the boards of Marc, Tex, Anton and Ed, most moves in the first phase of the game were made with the queen. Sierk can choose between Nd6 & Nf6 check after which the knight is knocked off anyway. Both moves have major consequences for the structure. Intuitively, from my couch at the side, the move Nd6 feels like the critical move. But that’s without any calculations. Sierk plays Nf6. I order a sparkling water and consider opening the book.
Before I open the book, I take another look. Tex has significantly improved his structure. The pawn of e6 has advanced one square. And all black pieces are harmonious. White is still ahead by a pawn, but it is still the double isolated c-pawn.
Sierk has a double rook endgame on the board. Sierk with bishop, opponent with knight. The white f6 pawn can become a problem. A battle for the open d-line seems to have to be in Sierk’s favor in the long term because of that same problem child. And then there’s the jumping knight. Those are always difficult. I’m not ready for the book yet, I notice, while after one sip of spa red I realize that I don’t really feel like it either. I actually want to go back to the gaming room. It’s an exciting match. The average playing time per player is now less than half an hour
Anton seems to be in a really good position now. He is more active, has more space and the black king can no longer castle.

Patriek must do everything he can to stay in the game. Rafael’s position looks overwhelming, but he has nothing concrete yet. Marc fires at the black king. The black pieces seem overloaded. Unless Black can castle out (it is almost impossible to imagine that this is possible) Suddenly I’m struck by the thought that maybe it’s more of a pizza day. Fortunately, I quickly come to my senses.
We open the score! Marc wins convincingly and with a killer combination at the end. 1-0. Tex has his pawn back and Ed and his opponent settle to double bishop against bishop/knight (Ed). Ed has a majority on the queenside which is easier to convert into a passed pawn. Patriek once again shows the street fighter mentality that he has acquired. He is firmly committed to the position and seems to have overcome the biggest problems. Anton also wins very convincingly. The pressure continued to build until it was no longer possible for Black to keep it at 2-0. Victor also wins. The constant time pressure is too much for the black player. He passes his flag in a complicated position 3-0
Unfortunately, things went wrong for Patriek. I don’t remember where that happened: 3-1. In the game of Rafael, pieces are exchanged, his position still seems visually nice and active, but the pawn he is behind will weigh more heavily.
It will be an exciting final phase of the match because it is suddenly over for Marcos. In a middle game with uneven bishops, his opponent’s black-squared bishop cuts through his position with disastrous consequences. 3-2 In Rafael’s case, his white-field bishop has suddenly crept in. It costs him a piece against a pawn. It is lost but there are still opportunities. Tex has an absolute crazy position on the board, but keeps a cool head in mutual time constraints and seems to be able to utilize a better position. With Ed, an uneven bishop endgame has arisen that should normally end in a draw. With Hilke it actually became a draw. Although later it remains that he was very good in the final position. 3.5-2.5. Ed keeps trying things. Could there be something of a forcing position on the queenside!?
Tex is in a better position and his opponent consumes a lot of time. In the meantime, Patriek and Victor are enjoying the oliebollen. Did Hilke take a third? In any case, the bag is empty. With Ed, the opponent seems to be slowly making progress. The material ratio remains the same, but a passed pawn suddenly becomes an option and Ed’s bishop is very passive. Yet it seems to me that this should still objectively be a draw endgame. Sierk and his opponent put a creative end to it, but here too a draw seems most likely. With Rafael, the extra b-pawn suddenly falls off. Why wasn’t it already on b4?! Half a team is now pacing.
Tex seems to be playing his way to victory with a steady hand. After an extreme fight, Sierk and his opponent agree on a draw 4-3. Ed seems to be going to keep it Tex wins!! What nerves of steel. 5-3.
Now there is only 1 half left to come from Rafael and Ed’s matches for a stunt. Rafael is behind material and is having a hard time. Ed is clearly in a draw. No, Ed is lost. No, now it’s really a draw. Guys, it’s over, Ed is going to lose. Rafael has to swallow a bitter pill. Unfortunately, his good play is not rewarded and he goes down fighting after he once again showed strength in the initial phase.
And with Ed… We no longer dare to make predictions. Although the contours of a smile seem to be forming at the corners of Ed’s mouth. Are we finally having a good time this season?! One of his pawns is removed, and another pawn is removed. Ed only has 1 pawn against 4 pawns. But it still seems like a draw. Then his opponent plays b4 and suddenly there are problems. He goes down in a study-like manner. After heroic defense. Still 5-5 We really deserved more, but still a good result!
